=nil; Foundation has introduced zkSharding, a scaling mechanism designed to increase Ethereum’s transaction throughput beyond 60,000 transactions per second (TPS). The approach merges zkRollup technology with sharding to enable parallel transaction processing while preserving a unified state. By maintaining liquidity and security in a shared environment, zkSharding addresses the fragmentation challenges associated with modular scaling solutions.
The foundation has been testing a predecessor of zkSharding for the past ten months within its Proof Market testnet. Now, it is making the technology available to the broader Ethereum community, with a focus on supporting high-load applications while keeping direct connectivity to Ethereum’s Layer 1.
zkSharding integrates multiple features aimed at optimizing Ethereum’s scalability. The system eliminates liquidity and security fragmentation by ensuring all transactions operate within a single, interconnected framework. It also maintains full composability with Ethereum’s base layer, allowing developers to build applications that interact with existing smart contracts and digital assets. Additionally, the architecture provides transparent and verifiable access to Ethereum data, reducing the need to transfer liquidity off-chain.
Security is a key component of zkSharding’s design. The system utilizes a Type-1 zkEVM compiled via zkLLVM from production-grade EVM high-level language source code. This approach ensures compatibility with Ethereum’s existing infrastructure while maintaining auditability and upgradeability.
In terms of execution, zkSharding combines modular and monolithic architectural benefits, giving Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) applications access to lower transaction fees without confining them to isolated environments. The platform also offers a trustless mechanism for accessing Ethereum data, removing the need for additional intermediaries. Data availability is secured by using Ethereum as a primary storage layer, with individual shards retaining the flexibility to implement their own data availability solutions.
